History Smit tug Hudson (1939)

After the success of the Zwarte Zee (III) from 1933, L. Smit & Co’s International Towing Service had build a new tug in 1939. The Hudson was the first of a new series of tugboats built for Smit. The Hudson was launched in April 1939, the trial run began at the beginning of July. In May 1940 Hudson is at sea, and due to the war situation in the Netherlands, the crew could not return to the home port of Maassluis.

Under command of Captain Weltevreden, the Hudson sails for the Allies during the Second World War. In Algiers, the Hudson tows a burning ammunition ship out of the harbor. The Hudson also assists for the landing in Normandy and has been laying fuel lines through the English Channel in 1944. Today, the Hudson enjoys a well-deserved retirement in Maassluis as a museum ship.

Our 1:1250 Hudson is 3 cm long and 0.59 cm width. Just like all BFT1250.nl ship models, this was based on the original building plans. Please do also have a look at the ship model of the Elbe.
