History lifeboat class Javazee
The lifeboat institution of the South of the Netherlands (KZHMRS) designed a new conventional type lifeboat in the early 1960s. Due to the rise of rescues by helicopters, a ship without masts was chosen, unlike the Northern lifeboat institution equivalent type Carlot. In 1963 the Koningin Juliana entered service, followed by the Javazee (1967) and finally De Zeemanspot (1972). The ships sailed out countless times between 1963 and 2006 and saved thousands of people. Famous rescues includes that of the ferry Herald of Free Enterprise in 1987. On 23 September 2006, the Javazee was the last conventional lifeboat in the Netherlands which was withdrawn from service.
Originally the Javazee type was built for the KZHMRS (‘The South’); the lifeboat organisation for the southern Netherlands. The ship was inspired by experiences with the President Jan Lels type lifeboat. In 1991 the two Dutch rescue companies (KZHMRS & KNZHRM) merged into the current KNRM (Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij). The Javazee type could now be seen in the former North lifeboat stations. The two types of conventional lifeboats have sailed together in the KNRM fleet for a number of years.
Our Javazee model version is 1.68 cm long and 0.37 cm wide. Just like all ships from BFT1250.nl, the ship model was designed on the basis of the original building plans. The model wears the original KZHMRS colors, as the Javazee had from 1967 to 1991. We also have a version available in the KNRM color scheme(1991-2006), which is the same color scheme as the current museum ships of this type.
